Retrofit cost effectively consolidates preschool and digital learning programs, fills formerly dark spaces with natural light
What was once a massive bustling office building transforms into two Newark City Schools firsts: its first designated preschool and the first true home for its NCS Digital online and in-person learning program.
This 50,000-square-foot adaptive reuse project converts part of the former State Farm building into Little Learners Preschool. It houses 12 classrooms designed based on early learner needs. Each classroom has a restroom, plus every four classrooms share an integrated therapy room.
NCS Digital houses four spaces for 6th through 12th graders including an entry lobby that displays projects as well as a room for the district’s IT department.
The retrofit introduces much more daylight into the previously poorly lit spaces. A new central courtyard creates a secure play area and delivers natural light. Additionally, the original windows along the main facade were dark and high. The design responds with clear windows and child-height openings so students can see outside.
Our teachers now have individual offices, and we can provide more STEM opportunities for students. We can have an innovation lab like at the high school, we can be more hands on, and there’s opportunity for more work with the community.
