Simulation and sustainability drive design of Joliet Junior College healthcare training facility
The Health Professions Center (HPC) expands Joliet Junior College’s nursing, allied health, and emergency services programs. A variety of simulated environments offer students realistic training scenarios. The 124,000-square-foot facility is home to the following programs: nursing (CNA/LPN/RN), fire science/EMS, radiologic technology, CPR, EKG, and phlebotomy.
Sustainable design strategies make the facility nearly 40% more energy efficient than a standard facility of similar size. The center’s curving stone and glass facade preserves mature oak trees and gives a nod to the natural fen that meanders through the center of campus.
A series of vistas are presented as one moves through the facility. Each view is framed and protected from summer sun with a shifting architectural expression of brise-soleils (sun shading devices).
