An intense windstorm called a derecho tore through the Midwest in August 2020. Meteorologists called it the costliest thunderstorm in U.S. history.
While assessing damage to the University Services Building, University of Iowa personnel discovered roofing membrane blowing in the wind. The detached membrane exposed the building to moisture penetration, insulation problems, and structural damage.
The next day, Legat’s Special Projects team assessed the damage, then promptly produced a report presenting immediate and long-term fixes. Later, the team completed similar services for Macbride Hall and the Levitt Center for University Advancement.
Termination bars and click-seam flashing were installed to hold down the membrane at the three facilities. Legat also designed full roof replacements, the first of which is under construction at Levitt Center.
